Gudbrandsdal Heritage Seminar featuring the Ringebu Emigration Festival

June 10-26, 2007

 


Day 1 - Sunday,  June 10 - MPLS/ST.PAUL-OSLO

Depart Mpls/St.Paul on your Icelandair flight or request space from your home city upon registration.

 

Day 2  - Monday,  June 11 - OSLO        

Arrive Gardermoen Airport Oslo.  Transfer to hotel in downtown Oslo.  Dinner and overnight at Rica Victoria.

 

Day 3  - Tuesday, June 12 – OSLO

Breakfast.   Independent transfer to Oslo Byarkiv*.   Classes and presentation to be arranged.  Lunch on own.  Independent transfer to University Library for the. N-A Collection*.  Return to hotel for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 4 - Wednesday, June 13 – OSLO-HAMAR

Breakfast.  Morning transfer by bus to Riksarkiv.  At 4:00pm depart for Hamar.  Dinner and overnight at Quality Hotel Astoria.  Possible presentation following dinner relating to the Statsarkiv.

 

Day 5 - Thursday, June 14 – HAMAR

Breakfast.  Independent transfer to Statsarkiv.*  Time for research and lunch on own.  Return to hotel for dinner and overnight.  Possible presentation following dinner.

 

Day 6 - Friday, June 15 – HAMAR

Breakfast.  Independent transfer to Statsarkiv.  Time for research and lunch on own.  Return to hotel for dinner and overnight

 

Day 7 - Saturday, June 16 – HAMAR-ELVESETER

Breakfast.  Transfer at  9:00am to the Emigrant Museum.  Introduction to the resources at the museum.  Lunch.  At  2:00pm drive to Lillehammer and through the Gudbrandsdal Valley.  Continue through Ottadal and Bøverdal to Elveseter.  Dinner and overnight at Elveseter Hotel, located in Jotunheimen National Park.   

 

Day 8 - Sunday, June 17 -  EXCURSION to LOM

Breakfast.  Opportunity to attend Sunday Church service in Lom.  Lunch at Fossheim Hotel.  Return to Elveseter.  Optional afternoon mountain walk.   Dinner at hotel.

  

Day 9 - Monday, June 18 -  ELVESETER-VÅGÅ-TRETTEN

Breakfast.  Drive to Vågå.  Time for research at  the Vågå Arkiv.   Lunch on own.   Depart Vågå at 4:00pm.  Drive to Glomstad Gård and Pensjonat in Tretten, our home for the next four nights.  Dinner and overnight.

 

Day 10 - Tuesday, June 19  -  TRETTEN-LILLEHAMMER-TRETTEN

Breakfast.  Excursion to Lillehammer, nestled by the shores of Norway’s largest lake, Lake Mjøsa.  Visit the Maihaugen Arkiv for research and possible presentations.  Return to Glomstad in late afternoon.  Dinner and overnight.

 

Day 11 - Wednesday, June 20  - TRETTEN

Breakfast.  Seminar activities at Glomstad.*  Morning coffee, lunch and dinner at Glomstad Gård.

 

Day 12 - Thursday,  June 21 - EXCURSION to LESJA & LESJASKOGEN

Breakfast.  Excursion to Lesja and Lesjaskogen.  Tour the Lesja Church, richly decorated with carved tableaux depicting Bible stories. Lunch at museum.  Optional shopping excursion in Lesja or optional visit to Lesja Bygdetun, an open-air museum with a collection of 11 houses which illustrates architecture, way of life and conditions in olden times.   Return to Glomstad for dinner and overnight. 

 

Day 13 - Friday, June 22 – TRETTEN-AREA EXCURSION- RINGEBU

Breakfast.  Excursion with local guide to Espedalen, Skåbu ,Kvikne, Vinstra and Sør-Fron.  Visit  Krogenes furniture factory, Skåbu Church, Solbraa saeter  where Anne Hov "discovered" how to make the Gudbrandsdal Cheese,  The Gålå Lake and the stage area for the Peer Gynt play performed annually every August.  

Time permitting stop at the Sødorp Church or Sør-Fron Church (the Mid-Gudbrandsdal Cathedral).  Continue to Gudbrandsgård Hotel, our home for the next three nights.  The hotel, at an altitude of 2443 ft., is situated close to the middle station on the Olympic Downhill Arena at Kvitfjell, one of the most varied and challenging alpine arenas in Europe. Welcome banquet and opening of the Ringebu Emigration Festival at 7:00pm.

Day 14 - Saturday, June 23 – RINGEBU

Breakfast.  Visit Fåvang Church.  Participate in Ringebu Days (10:30-2:00pm). Individual visits to ancestral farms and/or family visits. Optional excursions available to a sæter, Øksendalen, Storfjellsæter or Gopillen with Gullhaugen Mountain Chapel.  Return to Gudbrandsgård for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 15 - Sunday, June 24 - RINGEBU

Breakfast.  Participate in Ringebu Days.  At 9:30am guided tour of Ringebu Stave Church with Per Åsmundstad. At 11:00am participate in a church service in the Ringebu Stave Church, one of the largest of the remaining stave churches in Norway from 1220.  Coffee at Ringebusamlingene/Prestegarden following the service.   Opening ceremony of Weidemann Art Gallery.  Mountain visit to Skarvet (Fron) and Venabygd.   Lunch and dinner on own.   Evening Stave church concert with International Folk Music at 7:00pm. 

 
Day 16 – Monday, June 25 – RINGEBU-OSLO/GARDERMOEN

Breakfast.  Morning  genealogical seminar at Kaupanger, the Old Town Hall of Ringebu Return to Clarion Oslo Airport Hotel for  dinner and overnight.   

 

Day 17 – Tuesday, June 26 -  OSLO-USA

Breakfast.  Transfer to airport for check-in.  Longer stays may be requested upon registration for an additional charge of $50.

NOTICE

We all need time for planning.  This proposed tour illustrates good initial planning and excellent organization by Brekke Tours.  The schedule is the best we can provide at this time as there are many details to be finalized.  Reason for publishing this is that we have the basic mechanics completed so we have a very close price (see above), transportation, lodging, archives to visit, a rough schedule of presentations and sites to see.  There are always modifications and minor changes.  There are many presentations to finalize.
